The Orchid Nest was founded in 2013 by Lorie McCoy, the co-founder of Amazing Births & Beyond. Lorie has been educating and advocating for families in South Florida for more than a decade and has provided support at more than 800 births. The focus of Lorie and her dedicated team is to inspire better birth through advocacy, education and support. She is also a Sacred Pregnancy Instructor, HypnoBirthing Childbirth Educator, HypnoBirthing Fertility Practitioner and trainer for the HypnoBirthing Institute.
Pretty Pushers visited with Lorie at the Orchid Nest boutique which is located at The Palms Birth House in Delray Beach, Florida. Housed in a beautiful historic house, the Orchid Nest offers a nice array of products for the mother-to-be. We asked Lorie a few questions about her and the boutique.
Pretty Pushers: How long have you been in business? Who do you serve/who is your clientele?
Lorie McCoy: I HAVE BEEN A BIRTH WORKER SINCE 1999. OUR BIRTH SUPPORT STAFF SERVES WOMEN IN THE SOUTH FLORIDA AREA, SPECIFICALLY THE COUNTIES OF PALM BEACH AND BROWARD.
Pretty Pushers: What made you want to open your store?
Lorie McCoy: WE WANTED OUR BOUTIQUE TO MAKE AVAILABLE UNIQUE AND HARDER TO FIND ITEMS. WE CARRY MANY PRODUCTS THAT ARE MADE LOCALLY AND STRONGLY SUPPORT WOMEN OWNED BUSINESSES.
Pretty Pushers: What's the best part of your day?
Lorie McCoy: EVERY DAY IS UNIQUE. MANY DAYS OFTEN START WITH A CALL FROM A MOTHER IN LABOR!
Pretty Pushers: Do your customers inspire you? How?
Lorie McCoy: ABSOLUTELY! WE PROVIDE A LOT OF EDUCATION TO CLIENTS AND IT IS SO AFFIRMING AND INSPIRING TO SEE A MOTHER-TO-BE COME INTO HER OWN POWER AND CLAIM IT!
Pretty Pushers: Why do you carry Pretty Pushers in the store? Is it part of a change in how women are approaching their pregnancies?
Lorie McCoy: I HAVE ALWAYS CALLED THE TRADITIONAL HOSPITAL GOWN A UNIFORM AND HAVE ENCOURAGED MOTHERS TO BRING SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN TO WEAR INSTEAD. WHEN I SAW PRETTY PUSHERS ADVERTISED I KNEW WE HAD TO SELL THEM!
Pretty Pushers: Obviously we are Made in America and we like to support small, local businesses; what's great about your town and your community? What's great about it for new or expecting moms?
Lorie McCoy: SOUTH FLORIDA IN GENERAL IS A VERY TRANSIENT PLACE. AT OUR BIRTH HOUSE WE CREATE A SENSE OF COMMUNITY FOR OUR FAMILIES THAT BEGINS IN PREGNANCY AND CARRIES INTO TODDLERHOOD AND BEYOND.
Pretty Pushers: Do you have any upcoming events, workshops or anything else you'd like to share with our community of Pretty Pushers?
Lorie McCoy: OUR NEWEST OFFERING AT THE BIRTH HOUSE ARE THE SACRED PREGNANCY CLASSES. OUR NEXT SACRED MAMA MINI-RETREAT WILL BE MARCH 15 & 16TH, 2014. THESE ARE CLASSES AND MINI-RETREATS FOR WOMEN AT ANY STAGE IN PREGNANCY AND HELP FURTHER CREATE THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY THAT IS IMPORTANT TO US.
